What to Plan For Paris

Paris is busy with historic attractions, must-see sights and staggering achievements in architecture, town planning and structural engineering. Not only is France's capital city a venerated cultural hub of Europe, it is a bustling business and commerce centre, all of which offers visitors to Paris a unique fusion of ancient and modern, but remains vital to young and old alike.

When planning a trip to Paris, you could find setting an itinerary helpful. A great place to begin is on the Champ de Mars, where you'll find the spectacular Eiffel Tower. Situated by the Seine, the Eiffel Tower is an ideal starting point from which you can discover Paris's bohemian Rive Gauche. Designed by Gustave Eifel, the Tower is cast wholly of iron; its design reaches 324 metres in height and commands the use of 2.5 million rivets, all of which combines to create a design so iconic - it stands as an image of France around the world.

Iron Man

Towering above the Paris skyline, the Eiffel Tower is hard to miss. It's an exceptionally popular attraction, welcoming millions of visitors each year. Access is ticketed, with the first and second levels reachable by stairs and lifts, whilst the third tier can be reached by lifts alone. It is important to remember that queues will be long, but the view across the city is worth it from any level of the Tower. It boasts two restaurants; one Michelin-starred, and even if you don't climb the Tower, marvelling at the lace lattice of its structure and enjoying the surrounding gardens is a pleasure in itself.

What to Plan For Paris

The Left Bank (La Rive Gauche) is steeped in culture, and a literary tour of Parisian cafes, shops and cemeteries can be an enlightening afternoon endeavour. Discover Paris's beat generation and their dining and drinking haunts around the side alleys and streets of the city's romantic 14th arrondissment. Here, artists, authors and poets communed to create along Rue de Rennes, Boulevard Saint-Germain, Saint-Michel and Montparnasse. In fact, Rimbaud, Hemingway and Sartre, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Picasso and Man Ray were all inspired by Paris. What's more, in Montparnasse Cemetery you'll find the final resting place of Paris's cultural society, including Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs, Baudrillard, Sartre and De Beauvoir.

Deeper into the Left Bank, you can discover the regal splendour of the Palace of Versailles. A stunning example of French classic architecture and design, this Royal Chateau has been home to many of France's most renowned rulers, including Louis XVI and his wife, Marie-Antoinette. The Palace is situated roughly 20km from central Paris and has been exquisitely restored and protected.

If your time in Paris is coming to an end, certainly consider the Louvre. While the city itself is synonymous with art and culture, never more so is it distilled than in the vast Louvre Palace. Situated on the Right Bank (La Rive Droite), in the 1st arrondissment, the Louvre today houses some of the world's most famous works of art, across a variety of disciplines, from paintings and sculpture to artefacts.

The Musee du Louvre displays 35,000 works of art across a staggering 60,600 sq metres, and in some of the most ornate and beautiful gallery spaces in the world. Planning is key when visiting the Louvre - you could, quite literally, be there for days. Identify what exhibits you'd like to visit and make your way to the according wing; there are three wings - the Denon, Sully and Richelieu. Choose from Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings and Prints and Drawings. The museum is always popular with tourists and absorbed some 8.5 million visitors in 2008 alone.

As you can see, when on a short break to Paris, the better you plan, the more you can get out of your trip. Therefore, as well as considering the time of arrival from your flights to Paris, you could also easily arrange your hotel or B&B convenient to your itinerary, leaving you free to unwind and enjoy the pleasure of exploring Paris.

Keeping The American Sport's Competitive Spirit Alive: Part III Of A III Part Series

This is part three of a three-part series on America's competitive nature and its love of sports, in particular the love of boxing and baseball. In part two, we examined the history of boxing, now we examine the history and America's love for its national past time, baseball.

Baseball

Iron Man

Though Abner Doubleday is famed for having invented the sport, baseball is a sport derived from the English game of "rounders." It became a popular, professional sport just before the Civil War. Abner had nothing to do with its invention. In fact, Alexander Cartwright from the state of New York invented the game we know as baseball today in 1845, though it has undergone a few changes since then. The first known baseball game in America took place in 1846. The New York Baseball Club beat the Knickerbockers by a score of 23 to 1.

Keeping The American Sport's Competitive Spirit Alive: Part III Of A III Part Series

The first organized baseball league began in 1857. The 16 team league was known as The National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP). The league grew to include over 400 teams. The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the most popular, well-known team, and they became the first "pro" team in Major League Baseball (MLB). The "league" emerged after the Civil War with 6-8 teams until the Golden Era of baseball began in the 1920's with the emergence of Babe Ruth and the Bronx Bombers. When Babe Ruth swatted 60 home runs in 1927, the nation was captivated.

Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees rescued baseball from what was known as the "dead ball era". The dead-ball era went from almost 1900 to 1919, and was known for low-scoring games dominated by pitchers like Cy Young, the game's most winning all time pitcher to this day, though there were some excellent average hitters like Ty Cobb, who carried an astonishing.366 batting average over his entire career. The dead-ball era ushered in the construction of astronomical stadiums that were built specifically for baseball games to be played. These parks included Fenway Park in Boston which still exists, as does Comiskey Park and Wrigley Field in Chicago. It also included stadiums that are long gone as are the teams that played in them such as Brooklyn's Ebbets Field.

In 1936, The Baseball Hall of Fame was constructed in Cooperstown, New York to honor the history of the game. It inducted 4 great dead-ball era players and the man who changed the game: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and the Babe. Babe Ruth, the man who built Yankee Stadium, who put an end to the dead-ball era with his long home runs, and the American icon who made baseball America's favorite sport. Joe Dimaggio was one of the first baseball icons besides Babe Ruth. He set a hitting record that captured America's heart one hit at a time as he set the consecutive game hitting streak in 1941. Dimaggio had a hit in 56 consecutive games. In 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, and in Willie Mays, the "Say Hey Kid" hit the "shot heard round the world" in the 1951 World Series during the prime of his Hall of Fame career. Television provided a great boon to the sport's popularity in the 1950's.

Babe Ruth set some slugging records that lasted for decades. His 60 home runs in 1927 were the most hit in a single season until Roger Maris of the Yankees hit 61 homers in 1961. The home run record chase was so traumatic for Maris that he lost much of his hair during the season. His teammate, Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was the heir apparent to the Babe's record, but Maris beat him to it. Babe Ruth's career home run record of 714 was the most by any player until April 8, 1974 when Hank Aaron finally broke the record. Though Aaron received death threats because many deranged bigots didn't want to see an African-American break the white Ruth's hallowed record, Aaron prevailed and ended up hitting 755 home runs. That record stood until Barry Bonds broke it. He ended up hitting 762 long balls. Though his legacy is tainted by alleged steroid abuse, and both he and hitters like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's many hitting records are considered tainted as they all played during what is now being called the steroid era. This was a period from the early 1990's to the early 2000's. Though McGwire, Sosa, and even bonds helped save the popularity of the sport.

The 1994 labor dispute canceled the World Series for the first time since 1904, and many fans were disturbed by the fact that a strike cost America its beloved post season. Baseball's popularity took a massive hit because of the distasteful labor negotiations and the outcome of those negotiations.

Cal Ripken Jr. was the first player to help rescue baseball's popularity when he broke Lou Gherig's iron man streak by playing in 2131 consecutive games on September 6, 1995. The record had stood for 56 years, and Ripken's 2632 consecutive games played record will likely never be broken. The chase of Gherig's record brought a good deal of fanfare, and the festivities when he broke the record shined a spotlight on the game, but the chase of Maris' home run record by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa ultimately restored the game's popularity. As McGwire and Sosa battled all summer long during 1998, exchanging the home run lead, it became apparent that one of the two was going to eclipse the single season home run record of 61. In fact, they both broke the record, and America was enthralled as the long balls kept leaving the park, day after day after day. Then, on September 8th, 1998 McGwire hit his 62nd home run to be the first to break the twenty-seven year old record. Sosa congratulated McGwire with a big hug as McGwire played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Sosa played for the Cubs and they were playing each other in that historic game. McGwire ended up with the record with 70 home runs, 4 more than Sosa's 66 total. McGwire's record was broken 3 years later when Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001.

America loved and watched every minute of the home run chase, as the country has loved and adored baseball and boxing for so many years. Why? Simply because competition engenders winners and America was built by and filled with competitors and winners. It's why the nation is so strong and vibrant and why it has been this way for so many years. We are a competitive people who will ourselves to succeed and work hard to see that we do. Watching the competitors on the field or in the ring is like watching an extended family member succeed or fail. We simply enjoy the effort. Now if, you don't mind, I think I'll go pop a cold one and cook myself a hot dog and watch my team compete. It's the all American way to spend a relaxing evening!

Cold Kindness (Chapters 6,7,8; the Castle Tower)

6 [The Town-let/or *The Castle Tower of the City] Dieburg was not large by any means, but it was an interesting town; it was alive, and not many American GI's lived in Dieburg, lest they get scorned by the locals who still remembered WWII quite clearly, and the bombing by the Americans the city had to endure. Outside the city limits were grazing lands for a small heard of cows; and beyond that was an Army Nuclear Site, deep embedded within a wooded area. Thus, the city was really called; "Munster by Dieburg," for Munster was the city one had to go through--or might go through--to get to the site; where Adam had been stationed prior to his military discharge, and his taking over as the manager of the PX in Babenhausen. Munster (or Little Munster, there was another Munster in West Germany ((in the South)), called Big Munster); Dieburg was a few miles from Munster, as Munster was a few miles from the US Army Site. And Babenhausen was back a number of miles behind Dieburg. Thus, to get to the Military site from Babenhausen, you'd go to Dieburg, often, and then to Munster and then to the Site. Or one could bypass Dieburg, and go straight from Babenhausen to Munster and onto the Site. But in this case seldom did Carmen go to either places, that is, the Military Site near Munster or Munster itself; rather Babenhausen, or Dieburg, Darmstadt, some fifteen away.

Dieburg was an old city, with an old tower. An old church that still had bullet holes in its thick front wooden doors left over from the war, deep scars, like Carmen had, that did not seemed to fade with time.

Iron Man

As she parked her car by her apartment along side of the road, she lit another cigarette; she was becoming a chain smoker. In a habit-formed response she looked up at the first story window to see if Ivan (the landlord, fifty-seven years old) and his wife Anna Marie (forty-five) were home, she didn't see him, or his wife's pale moon face that looked like a mask of a balled Hindu priest, with an undisturbed calm about it, as she seemed always to have. Her big bay window was empty, and the curtains covered it for the most part, no movement, no one staring out, or around the curtains to see if she was coming home, as often one of them did. Perhaps their friends Heinz, Gisela and Helmut, were over playing cards she conjured in her mind; that would be on the other side of their apartment, not the bay window side, in the kitchen. Oddly enough, their kitchen was on the opposite side of hers.

Cold Kindness (Chapters 6,7,8; the Castle Tower)

Her mind now shifted on cool lemonade as she walked to the wrought-iron gates (with a spiked brick wall on each side of the gates), to the door of the duplex, and its few flowers that sat outside the large house: perennials, minced with daisies. She then got into the hallway, walked up the fourteen steps to the second floor.

As she paced her kitchen floor looking outside her window, the park looked so peaceful and picturesque. Spring was beautiful in Dieburg, she thought, but not the forthcoming nights. She then poured herself some lemonade.

[Nightly Ineptness] Sometimes she just wanted to disappear when she thought Adam or Günter was laughing at her. She was trying to stand on her own two feet, as a woman and individual, in spite of her age. Whatever it was, she felt she had no ability to put herself to sleep, other than drink herself drunk to do so at times, which she'd do a few times a week; knock herself out with the kick of booze; it was her idea, do it quick, before she could dream, or unwillingly enter the world of nightmares. But much too often she felt useless and not in control, if she could avoid night-sleep completely, all the better, she would have done so. On the other hand, if she could get a good night sleep, it would be God sent. On another note, there was no synagogue in Dieburg; she'd have to go to Frankfurt where her mother went for her spiritual needs, one might say, once a month or so; or to Darmstadt, yet that didn't help her sleeping dilemma.

She tried to sleep in her natural rhythm, but it would change, she tried to vision Adam staying overnight, for he had done so a few times in the beginning of their relationship, but she scared him off waking up screaming, and her heart pounding, as if she was running after the three SS-Soldiers who took her father from her in 1944, never to return again; that was the last time she had seen him.

She liked Adam, he had a long thick neck, how she remembered her father as; and broad shoulders, narrow hips, an impressive specimen of a man she'd deliberate, when alone; a young man of twenty-three; unbroken by the world yet, superimposed ideology.

7

Both of their natures were different in a sense, what they lacked was what they did not examine in fear of finding out, I would expect (Adam didn't know his weaknesses, which would come out in time; and Carmen, knew hers it seemed, and thus, became dependent on Adam for support, which he really couldn't give; couldn't give because of his own weaknesses). Somehow it seemed in the long run--for they had been dating close to a year now--in the long run, they could not recognized how to work out their differences--partly because of her catatonic condition [s], and his runaway reaction [s]; and to repeat myself, examine them in fear of having to put work into it; let me explain: Carmen needed success in business to feel good about herself, where few women enjoyed the challenge without male hindrance (remembering this was back in 1960) she needed it, and pushed the male part out of her way to find it, to get it. Adam, on the other hand, a good looking man in many ways, with more of a stable personality than Carmen, but could also be a heavy drinker, and a hot tempered man at times and was much more carefree than Carmen, too much so in his business, to where it affected his management of the store: that is to say, his fooling around with the help, didn't help his store's profits, he'd steal from it if need be to make it through the month, and fix the books to make it all filter out properly, all in the name of amusement. He had spent two years in the military, and took a European out [as it is called, when leaving the military and remaining in country], thus, acquiring a job as the manager for the government store [as they say in the military: the PX], under a civilian status. But again, not much was being worked on the relationship, in the sense of trying to preserve it and deal with the surfacing issues:

[Colorlessly] The days were gone--where their presence, would create a spark within them...Carmen didn't notice Adam's preoccupation almost matched hers; his being how to get out of the relationship that seemed to be getting progressively stronger, or worse; and trying to start another life for himself without her; whereas hers was trying to hang onto him by all means.

When Frantisek Andre showed up one Saturday, he was out of his office to meet her like a bolt of lightening, as if he was watching out a window for her. She was becoming his, if not hers also, developing distraction; both fancied one another; that is, while her husband was in training, she grew to liking Adam more and more; or so it seemed, that it was starting to be.

Frantisek looked at Adam, he looked so miserable she thought. "I thought it would be all right to make a little visit down to your PX, and see you, getting some bread for 'show and tell,' you know, so no one picks up on ..." she stopped, for nothing had really happened yet, it was all in the makings. "You're good for me dear," she said, something for him to think about was her intentions.

I would think, and Adam knew, or at least he felt it, Carmen loved him, but then she didn't seem to love herself, I suppose a self-esteem issue that was more noticeable recently. And what bothered him most was she seemed to, inescapably project, her lack of self-worth onto their relationship, or better put, onto him. True, self-esteem can be made healthier if we feel loved, which she was trying to pull from Adam, but it was hard for her to believe Adam loved her--I suppose it scared her. She could suffocate him at times, and that was another peeve with him: "Prove you love me," she'd say to him. As a result, it was hard for him to meet her needs.

But Adam loved her nonetheless--yet love is a challenge at times, and can be quite puzzling, and there were many danger signals he seemed to recognize in recent time. He was seeing her as she really was, not as he'd wished her to be (as back in Garmisch), and that again was a drawback. She needed help, and those dreams brought on frenzied, if not gloomy attacks, a dimness to his perspective on his wanting to have an ongoing relationship with her (so, unintentionally, he put her on probation within the vaults of his mind). And love was a decision, one he was not sure he could fully make, under such conditions.

O, they used to set aside time for certain things for them to do each week, and now it was more at random; meaning, the golden times were kind of over for them, and she was trying to sew them back together. Could he turn 'hate' around? ...was a thought that was going on in his mind lately. Hate being the other side of love. He was in pain over this relationship. He couldn't walk in her shoes; empathy was not in his heart, as much as it may have been needed to be.

A Morning, But no Sun

The morning comes, but brings no sun;

The sky with storm is overrun;

And here I sit in my room alone,

And feel, as I hear the tempest moan,

Like one who hath lost the last and beat,

The dearest dweller from [my] breast!

--T B. Read

As she looked at the tower, its beautiful thick stone structure, as if it was undefeatable, with its roof that looked like a hat, out of some Asian city, she was in its grips, it was numbing her, numbing her wits, her thinking, what thinking she could keep in place in her fragmented at times, and numbing mind; consequently, she tried to push it aside, ignore it, hide from it by pacing the kitchen floor; but the mind controls the body, and the body knows that and weakens as the mind overheats, as her mind often did. For a long time, very long time she had an emptiness in her, possibly it was her feeling that her father abandoned her; oh, she knew he didn't leave her on purpose, '...but he could had taken off to London in 1943, taken off in time to avoid those SS-Men, and not waited until the SS came to get him in 1944, what was he waiting for, to get caught so he didn't have to be with us...,' were her thoughts

[The many thoughts of Carmen] Everyone blames Hitler, the Jew hater, the killer. They even drew pictures, cartoons of Jews attacking German girls (during the time of the war ((some fifteen years ago)), raping them to built hate against the Jew, but the Fuhrer wasn't there that day they took my father (she told herself time after time after time). In 1944, the Americans and British troops were landing in France; he [he being: Hitler] was too busy with that stuff to order my father's death. ('No,' she concluded a hundred times), Hitler was not the first nor the last word of the war or the direct cause of my father's death (indirectly, yes), many people were with him, told him, pushed him to do evil, but he did not kill my father, evil or not, it was those three soldiers. Father's death was by the Nazi system; by the three Bavarian soldiers who took him to the death camp at Chelmno (Carmen did not know for sure where her father was taken but had overheard a learned man was taken that day from a library out of a big house within the city of Augsburg, to Chelmno). They are the men in dark in my dreams, she had concluded. And so she told herself time and again all these things, wrote letters and made notes of her sorrows, her thinking; put them in a shoebox. She divided Hitler from the Nazi Party separating one from the other, trying not to get angry at the cause or social unrest, but rather at the serological minds that chose to do the damage; she even watched the Nuremberg trials over and over to see if she could identify any of the three soldiers who had taken her father from her. But she never could identify one. In her mind, they kidnapped him, with ill-conceived will, '...they could have passed the house,' she chanted to herself. 'They could have said, these SS-Men, if they wanted to, they could have said: No need to kill one old Jew today, let's do something better than wipe out a Jew ok? Everybody at the trials in Nuremberg said: we were taking orders, which were a major part of their appeals, yet saying you're sorry does not mean one stinking thing. It does not bring back the dead.'

It was I suppose why she needed to be self sufficient, somewhat in charge of herself; just something inside of her, telling her: no one should be allowed to put you back into such a predicament.

She looked at the corner of her bed, a table was there with a light on it, and the Talmud sat alone in its embossed brown leather with its leather clasps. Her father thought much of it, she hardly ever read it though, but it was a keepsake, and still it was her gift from her mother, her father took it wherever he'd go, if it was for more than a week at a time that is. He was scholarly at its contents, of the oral law. He used to tell her "It is the wisdom of thousands of years condensed." Then he'd add: "It is my daughter, the conglomerate of law, legend, and philosophy." Then he'd insert, "...use it for unrealistic problems in your life, they will come," adding, "Werden alle dich dose ...!" (Become all you can). But she was only four years old, and now it didn't seem to matter.

'It was in 1944,' she whispered to herself, now looking at the tower again, '1944, I was sitting in the library of father's study, it reminded me of a bell tower of sorts, he used to toy with me about that, and when I looked out the window, I could see other towers, (it was in Augsburg, Germany), maybe they were steeples now that I think about it; then mom and I were taken by surprise when the SS-Men, Hitler's Germans came in, dad said, "Hide behind the armchair and curtain," it was a long curtain, and the chair was in front of it, and we hid, but I could see from a crack I made in the fabric of the two curtains together, I could see them. And they pulled him away, pulled him away like a dog, akin to a drunk off the streets; all three men; one was an officer, the other two of lesser rank possibly. We then went to London to escape, mom and I. Dad always told mom to do that, should something resembling this happen because they'd torture him until he talked, and he needed to know we were safe, so he made us both promise to quickly go to London, to leave everything except for the cash we on hand, along with some hidden inside a book on the bookstand in his library and some jewelry, along two paintings on the walls, small paintings worth a few Marks, or Franks, or dollars, should this very thing happen.'

It was not easy getting to London, and bribery was needed to persuade a German friend to drive them to Paris, a painting that was in the library persuaded him though, a Picasso, and in the dark of the night, Carmen's mother passed as Hermann's wife, from there, she had found a boarding house in Paris, which had refugees from several countries, all pretending to be of German stock or at least not Jewish, and in support of the new regime. At the boarding house the French supporters of the Germans, were not supports as they had pretended, and made arrangements for Carmen and her mother for passage onto London. Again, she gave a painting she had hidden away in her suitcase for the hardship of getting them there, a painting of Goya's.

As she looked at her bed, she wanted to make love with Adam, to forget her day-dreaming. It was Saturday evening, Sunday the restaurant was not open, so that was good. But the PX was open, and Adam had to work.

[Wake up] 'Carmen woke up,' a voice said (too often a distant...and bewildered voice within her, intruded--) it was the middle of the night, out of her sleep she bent over the bed, lo, the same nightmare had come and faded away, but not until she was in a panic. The nightmare was like her shadow, she couldn't shake it; she was struggling with tears to overcome it:

"I'm sorry daddy, honestly I am," she cried. Then started thinking: how will it be in ten-years? She was still leaning over the bed, the leather book by the side of her face. "Everything in ten years will be the same: in twenty-years, in thirty-years." She shook her head, and then added to her self-talk, "I know Adam's toleration is melting away, and I love him so, so very much." She bent upward toward the bedside window, there was the tower again. It had strength to it, strength she needed: she whispered to herself as if talking to the tower: 'One has to have somebody daddy?' a statement-question possibly. She felt childish, and slipped back under her covers to try and fall back to sleep again (wearing a black calico nightgown). She wanted to be: free, free, free of the burdensome nightmares. She found herself drifting off saying: "Frei, frei, frei, frei, frei..." (...free, free...) as if she was counting sheep. Then no sooner had she fallen to sleep, the telephone rang, it woke Carmen up from a dead sleep, one she cherished, for there was no duplicating of a nightmare then; those kind of sleeps she never had a memory of, with a little irritation she rolled out of bed and went into the kitchen to answer it, then it was already on its forth ring; when she answered, the person had already hung up, but the light of the day was shinning through her window: no need to turn on the light she told herself. She sat down by the window, looked at the tower again, the brook over in the park and just thought of Adam, how it used to be, and started to write two poems, poetry and water calmed her:

Off, on Off

We fear death [it]

Weeps at its breast...

For we cannot change--

What we fear to lose
...'Life!"

Hell's Hawks

Hawks dyed coal black,

I rode to hell and back;

All I saw was a mass

A mass of clay

People baked...

Baked

From fiery flames--

Sneering...

Savage Nature: The Life of Ted Hughes

One of the most important poets of the post-war period, Edward James Hughes (1930-1998), was drawn towards the primitive. He was enchanted by the beauty of the natural world, frequently portraying its cruel and savage temperament in his work as a reflection of his own personal suffering and mystical beliefs - convinced that modern man had lost touch with the primordial side of his nature.

Born in Mytholmroyd, a remote mill town in West Yorkshire, Ted (as he was known to his friends and family) was enormously affected by the desolate moorland landscape of his childhood, and also by his father's vivid recollections of the brutality of trench warfare. Indeed, his father, who was then a carpenter, was one of only seventeen men from his regiment to have survived at Gallipoli during the First World War.

Iron Man

At the age of seven his family moved to Mexborough (also in Yorkshire), where his parents opened a stationery and tobacco shop. Here he attended the local grammar school, where he first began to write poetry - usually bloodcurdling verses about Zulus and cowboys - before doing two years' national service in the Royal Air Force. He later won a scholarship to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he started reading English Literature but switched to archaeology and anthropology, subjects that were a major influence on the development of his poetic awareness. Here he immersed himself in the works of Shakespeare, W.B. Yeats and read Robert Graves's "The White Goddess" (1948).

Savage Nature: The Life of Ted Hughes

Following his graduation in 1954, he moved to London, where he had a number of interesting jobs, including zoo keeping, gardening and script reading for J. Arthur Rank. He also had several of his poems published in university magazines. In 1956 he and some Cambridge friends started up a literary journal called St. Botolph's Review. It lasted for only one issue but at the inaugural party Ted met his future wife, the then unknown American poet, Sylvia Plath.

Much has been written about the Hughes/Plath relationship since that first portentous meeting, but few can doubt that these two brilliantly creative people were enormously attracted to one another, almost from the moment they were first introduced. Within just a few short months they were married and living in the USA, where Hughes taught English and creative writing at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. And before the year was out, he had won an American poetry competition, judged by W.H. Auden, Sir Stephen Spender and Marianne Moore. Hughes once said of this contented period:

"We would write poetry every day. It was all we were interested in, all we ever did." - Ted Hughes

Plath assisted him with the preparation of his first collection, The Hawk in the Rain (1957), a work that was quite extraordinary in its treatment of natural subjects. He continued to live in America for the next few years, being partly supported by a Guggenheim Foundation grant, before returning to England in 1959. He then went on to win the Somerset Maugham award and the Hawthornden prize for his second book, "Luperca"l (1960); confirming his reputation as one of the most important poets of the post-war period.

The next few years of Ted's life have since become the subject of much biographical speculation. However, the simple facts are that he and Plath had two children and moved to Devon in 1961. Their marriage began to disintegrate shortly thereafter and Hughes started an affair with Assia Wevill. He split from Plath and she committed suicide in her London flat in 1963. In 1969 Wevill also killed herself and their child. He married Carol Orchard in 1970 and spent the rest of his life trying to protect his and Plath's children from the media. Hughes published only children's poetry and prose in the years following the death of his first wife.

His next major work was "Wodwo" (1967), which took its title from a character in the medieval romance "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", and highlighted his increasing interest in mythology. He travelled to Iran in 1971, where he wrote the verse/drama "Orghast" in an invented language. Some of his other collections include "Crow" (1970), "Cave Birds" (1975), "Season Songs" (1976), "Gaudete" (a long poem on fertility rites, 1977), "Moortown" (1979), "Remains of Elmet" (1979) and "River" (1983).

Hughes was also one of the originators of the Arvon Foundation and was awarded an OBE in 1977. In 1984 he was appointed Poet Laureate and went on to publish "Rain-Charm for the Duchy and other Laureate Poems" (1992). Then in 1995 he composed a poem about Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, for her 95th birthday, likening her to a six-rooted tree. He also wrote many reviews and essays, some of which were collected in "Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being" (1992), "A Dancer to God: Tribute to T.S. Eliot" (1992) and "Winter Pollen: Occasional Prose" (1994). In addition to all this he also wrote many wonderful plays and books for children, including his remarkable fantasy "The Iron Man". And when, just months before his death, Hughes released "Birthday Letters", a collection of poems about his life with Sylvia Plath, it became an immediate bestseller throughout the English speaking world and was widely praised for its searing honesty.

Ted Hughes died of cancer on 28th October 1998, having just been appointed to the Order of Merit. Andrew Motion followed him as Britain's Poet Laureate.

The Birth of the Khalsa

The period of the 16th and 17th century was one of tremendous turmoil in India for the Hindus. There was all around persecution by the Moslem rulers, who also levied the Jizya tax as well as razed temples to the ground.

In such a scenario the need of the hour was to counter the Moslems acts of perfidy with force. But a dispirited Hindu populace could not think of anything. This was the period when the tenth Guru Gobind Singh hit upon a divine plan to counter the Moslems.

Iron Man

Accordingly he created a religious order that was to become the sword arm of the oppressed people. He created the Khalsa -meaning the pure to fight the Moslems. Guru Gobind Singh was a genius and realized that only a shock therapy could galvanize the moribund Hindu masses to take up arms.

The Birth of the Khalsa

Thus on Baisikhi day in 1699 he called for a congregation of his followers at Anandpur sahib in the Punjab. People from all over North India flocked to the place, to hear what the great Guru had to tell them. The Guru soon appeared on the stage in resplendent robes with a naked sword. He announced to the congregation that he would baptize five Sikhs and create the khalsa. He thundered that he would like five followers who were ready to follow him, even to death.

There was all round silence as the purport of the Sikh Gurus words sank into the minds of the congregation. The Guru repeated his words.History records that one man got up and approached the Guru and declared that he was ready to die for the cause. The Guru took him by the hand and led him out of the dais. The crowd waited with baited breath as the great guru returned with his sword glistening and soaked with blood. To all it was apparent that the Guru had severed the head of the disciple.

The guru asked for one more volunteer and history records that the guru took him outside and again returned with his bloody sword. He thus asked and got 5 volunteers. At the end the guru went out and returned with the five volunteers who were alive and well. The Guru had not cut their heads, but only a goat.

This was an excellent motivational ploy to galvanize the Sikhs.the guru created the khalsa and specified a form represented by the five K's. Namely Kesh (hair), Kirpan (dagger), Kanga (comb), Kacha (under garment) and kara (iron bangle)

The great Guru thus created a militant form of Hinduism that set in motion the creation of an Army that fought the Moslems. it was a first step to the establishment of the Sikh Raj a hundred years later. This day remains one of the most important days in Indian history.

How To Rebuild Trust After An Affair - What To Do When He's Cheated

Women have a different approach when it comes to dealing with infidelities. Some choose to mend it; others give up too easily and end it. But for those ladies who chose to fight for their men, the real battle is not about getting rid of the third party. It's about finding ways on how to rebuild trust after an affair.

Females often have that innate intuition to know whether something's wrong. And oftentimes, the hunch becomes a reality. Infidelity can severely cripple a relationship because it takes away trust - which is a relationship's core foundation.

Iron Man

Since women are generally subtle and softer individuals, they tend to be so much devastated when a relationship glitch happens. And even if the commotion is over though, females find it hard to "move on" from the horror. Even if a wife forgives her husband, it may take some time still, for the relationship to come back to its pre-affair state.

How To Rebuild Trust After An Affair - What To Do When He's Cheated

For distraught women, trusting their men again can be as hard as stopping the urge to shop; but definitely, there is still hope that the broken trust can be glued again. Here are three extremely simplified ways on how to rebuild trust after an affair:

1. Sometimes the fault is not entirely his, and a woman must accept this. Everything might not just be the fault of the guy. Perhaps the reason why he was in an affair is because he might as well been pushed away his wife. If this is understood, that maybe she also has some shortcomings, it'll be much easier in time, for her to forgive the past and move on with a happier future.

2. Communication is essential. Communication entails not only talking with each other, but also listening to what each one has to say. Setting clear goals with one's husband is a sure deal to iron out expectations and avoid any frustration in both parties. When the man admits his fault and promises to change, try to believe it, even if at first you are unsure as this is a good way in itself to learn how to rebuild trust after an affair. Set contracts with each other. Talk, and listen. Give and take.

3. Seeking support is helpful. If those longstanding and too serious issues of the past just can't seem to be left out of general conversation, then perhaps the help of others can do the trick. Seeking support through counseling can enable both parties to see the light in each other and why staying together may be the right option, despite all that has happened.

Women have their own way of surviving a relationship problem, especially a thing as big as her guy having an affair. But what is good about women is the fact that once they see that love is still there, they really won't give up. Most people say that trust is the glue that keeps a relationship together; that's why when it fades, the relationship suffers too. Finding ways on how to rebuild trust after an affair for both parties is a good start to start that glue sticking again.

Ancient Greek Warfare - The Phalanx

Classical Phalanx

Drums beat in the distance, keeping the rhythm of the advance. The hot Greek sun beats down on you under your heavy armor and equipment. The overlapping shields of you and your fellow soldiers keeps you locked into formation, steadily advancing towards your enemy. Several yards out from the enemy line, the order is given to charge. You crash into your opponent's shield with a sickening crunch, the pushing match has begun. Friendly soldiers behind you push you harder into the enemies' shields as their allies do the same for them. Placing your left soldier and thigh against the rim of your shield, you push with all your might as you stab through the cracks in the shield wall with your spear. The rank behind you stabs over it. Welcome to phalanx warfare.

Iron Man

Battles would continue like this for over an hour with many men being crushed to death, suffocating in the heat, or being speared by the enemy. Eventually, the line on one side would break and the men would scatter, knowing the battle was lost. These pushing matches were how many experts believe Greek warfare was fought during the late Archaic Age and all during the Classical age, with little variation. But first, what exactly is the phalanx?

Ancient Greek Warfare - The Phalanx

The phalanx can best be described as a long line of heavily armored men moving in rhythm with each other. As hoplites carried massive shields, these would overlap with the shields of the men next to each hoplite. You defended the man to your left with your shield and the man to your right defended you. This created a solid wall of bronze with iron tipped spears poking out. Drums or other kinds of musical instruments kept the rhythm for the advance. If anyone ran ahead or fell behind, the solid line would be incomplete and severely weakened as a result. Since the phalanx required much concentration and cohesion to maintain, it was only effective at a walk or slow charge and even then, only on flat even ground. Uneven terrain would break up the shape in a heartbeat. In addition to this, attacked from the sides or rear, the phalanx was slaughtered and as this formation was so slow, being attacked in the flanks was a very real threat.

Despite these flaws, in head on engagements almost nothing could penetrate the solid wall of the phalanx except for another, larger phalanx. The typical phalanx was eight men deep, that is, eight rows of men, and any number of men wide. There are instances of both less and greater ranks of men in various battles though. The hoplite's main weapon was a spear between seven to nine feet long. With spears this long, the first two ranks of men would be able to reach the enemy with their spears. Deeper rows would serve as both reinforcements if front row men fell and as pushing weight used to keep pressure on and break the enemy's line. As a greater physical force than the opponent was required to win, sometimes there would be veteran soldiers in the very rear of the phalanx with swords drawn to "prod" their men on and keep them from faltering.

Macedonian Phalanx

Philip II of Macedon saw both the potential and limitations of the Greek phalanx and sought to improve it and make it truly unstoppable. He created the sarissa, a spear 18 feet long and held in both hands, rather than the hoplite's one. As a result, five rows of men could present their sarissa to the enemy! That means there were more spears in the front row than there were targets for them to skewer! The flip side of the coin, however, is that as both hands were required to wield the deadly sarissa, a large shield could no longer be used. A much smaller, lighter shield was strapped to the arm or done away with completely; as was most of the heavy armor. With five rows of spear points presented no enemy could be able to get close enough for the soldiers to need armor. He called his new infantry phalangites, rather than hoplites.

In addition to reinventing the phalanx, Philip II of Macedon added a very heavy and very deadly cavalry element to his army to compensate for the phalanx's lack of flexibility, speed, and mobility. He added javelin throwers and heavy infantry in addition to a large variety of other soldiers, all in an effort to make his army more flexible and adaptable. With this army he easily defeated Greek phalanx armies and was able to gain political power over Greece. Upon his death, his son, Alexander, took over Macedon and with the powerful phalanx and army developed by Philip, Alexander went on to conquer the Persian empire. The phalanx, with its mobile yet heavy cavalry wing, helped create the empire of Alexander the Great.

The End

Ultimately, the phalanx's lack of flexibility, slow speed, and enormous vulnerability on the flanks led to its demise. Roman armies, using highly adaptable formations and advanced battle tactics, were able to defeat the phalanx in all its variations. They exploited its weaknesses and avoided its strength and wound up conquering all of Greece, an achievement never before done. After centuries of total domination of the battlefield, the phalanx became obsolete. It should be noted, however, that various alterations of the phalanx were used in wars and armies millennia later, albeit limitedly.

Article on Poetry and Two Poems

Writing Poetry for Tomorrow

What does a man need to be a poet, or tomorrow's literary giant? Questions many a student has asked, from Harvard all the way to the community college in one's hometown. What is the answer? Well, I can give you mine, and I'm sure if you asked a hundred writers, or a hundred scholars, you'd get two hundred different answers.

Iron Man

I'm sure some would say: hard work, while others might say, the right college, or a break, or it is who you know. Money can play a part in it others would say, and timing, I mean, given the opportunity. And it may very well be all of these, but let me iron out what I think might lay underneath the cellar, for its been cleaned out pretty well above it.

Article on Poetry and Two Poems

What is genius to you? Well, to me it is when something comes natural, easy. And so it should be in the premise we are now talking about. How about experiences in isolation, seclusion (be it in a willing environment or not: like engulfed in drugs or alcohol or prison, war, or some melancholy hole, or illness. How about exquisiteness or beauties per se; let's try a good sense of humor when the chips are down especially--wit might fit better; and how about strong, if not strange empathy and passion. All the schools and brains in the world cannot replace these requirements. Should you have these, and the money, time and schooling all the better; should you not, your possibly going to get tired of writing anyhow, you have nothing to say; rather report, it would be better.

Hollow-eyed girl

Little hollow-eyed girl

staring-up at the big world

wearing a pink flannel nightgown--

barefoot and all....

Sleeping parents unaware

she slipped out of bed (to somewhere)

whispers a voice, unexpectantly

(a thin mouth quivering):

"You do look kind of like a

picture that might have been...."

The mother reaches out to gather

the child into her embrace

...

"Poor little thing," she thinks

(still in her dream).

The child stands back--

Deserted once by her mother

Tossed back to oblivion.

Yet the echoes of

"Mommy..."

Is heard--over and over

(like the humming of a train on tracks).

"But aren't you cold?"

Asks the dreaming woman,

"Come, take my hand!"

The child stern--: now stares

With pale lips--

Puckered with disappointment

She whimpers a tear.

With pathetic eagerness

She asks again (the child bemused)

Says:

"I don't know the way...and

You don't have time..."

And as she wakes up, the child

Disappears!...

Light In Your Life

Man must ask himself four things: Who am I, wherefrom have I come, whither am I going, How long shall I be here? Spiritual queries begin with these questions. One must try to find answers to these queries; otherwise his life will be like a letter that goes into the dead letter office or in recent language, into the recycle bin from where one has to try by himself if he wants to be restored.

There is a cycle-that of birth and death, if man has to escape this never ending process he must try hard himself, nobody else can do it for him. One can buy almost any thing with money but not fate, luck, destiny, reputation and health. One can buy a costly mattress, but not sleep. What does this show? Some things are beyond our grasp. To understand life's mysteries, man must strive to think about his aims and goals-whether they are on the right path and analyze it.

Iron Man

Man must struggle to get to the top of the ladder of spirituality. He should have faith in victory. Man must gather faith and courage from those who are of similar spiritual inclination. He should not have contact with persons who sow the seeds of fear or doubt. Detachment should be the motto, for all things in this world are fleeting and do not last for long. Attachment causes misery and causes impediments in progress.

Light In Your Life

If man carries an unbroken effort, the Lord himself comes as guide and savior He guards you from unwanted elements and leads you to liberation. Pray to God with an open heart and He shall reveal to you that He is present in all beings. Some realize it and they are like shining iron pieces attracted to the magnet-God, but others are like rusted pieces, which will not be attracted even if the magnet is very near. The rust can be removed by constantly remembering the Lord's name and washing the heart clean of bad thoughts, ego, envy and other vices. If the road of our mind is repaired, then the Lord will come to stay with us again.

Decide to move from the low to the high. Improve character and conduct; when feelings are cleansed and impulses become pure, and intelligence free from crookedness then God becomes a reality.

When you are in a dark room, you feel the darkness, but when a light is switched on, the darkness disappears. Everything can be seen clearly then, similarly when the light of God shines on you, life becomes illuminated and elevated. So strive hard to bring in the light in your life.

Choose the Perfect Bridal Veil

After you find the wedding gown of your dreams, the next step is to accessorize it perfectly. One of the accessories with the biggest impact is your bridal veil. There are many more to choose from than some brides realize, from plain tulle to beaded edged to lace mantilla styles.

Two of the first considerations about your bridal veil will be length and fullness. For brides who are wishy-washy about wearing a veil, they often want one that has a subdued presence. It is a common belief that a short veil makes less of an impact, but surprisingly this is not the case. A thin floor length veil will hang fairly straight down the bride's back, but a shortie veil will pouf up because it has less weight to pull it down.

Iron Man

Veils can be made in a number of standard lengths, including shoulder, waist, fingertip, mid-calf, floor, chapel, and cathedral length. Fingertip is the most popular option because it is very easy to wear for the entire wedding, including the reception. Many brides, though, love a veil that is as long as the train of their gown, and there are several ways to handle such a veil after the ceremony. Some brides will simply remove the veil, keeping only their headpiece on for the reception. This is a fine option, but often women just feel like less of a bride without a veil. For those brides, other options include having the veil bustled to the gown (especially if the veil and gown have matching lace) or gracefully draping the veil over one arm (often seen during the receiving line). Oftentimes, a bride will simply order a second, shorter veil or use her blusher (if she wore one) as a veil after the ceremony.

Choose the Perfect Bridal Veil

It used to be that a blusher was de rigueur, but many modern brides will skip the blusher unless it is customary in their religious tradition. Don't be too quick to dismiss the blusher, though. One man I knew was watching a movie with a wedding scene, and kept asking why the bride was not wearing a veil. Well, she was wearing a veil, a very long one, but she did not have a blusher over her face. To this man, and many others, the blusher is what really says "veil". If that is what your groom expects to see when you walk down the aisle, you don't want to disappoint him.

Once you have made the basic decisions about your veil, you can get into all of the exciting details. Most veils are tulle, but silk chiffon or organza are also available. Veils can be one entire piece of Belgian lace (these exquisite veils become family heirlooms), embroidered, trimmed in Alençon lace, finished with ribbons, satin bias trim, or beaded. A great way to bring your whole look together is to select a veil that will coordinate with your handcrafted bridal jewelry (or vice-versa). Swarovksi crystals and tiny beads look spectacular stitched along the edge of a veil. They also give the veil a good weight so that it will not be too flyaway.

Another way that veils are embellished is to bead a lace border with pearls and crystals. This is a rich and classic look which is often done using the same lace appliqué as on the bride's gown. To compliment this special type of veil, choose handcrafted bridal jewelry with the same crystals and pearls that were used on the veil. Simple, timeless earrings and necklaces are the perfect accent pieces to give the bridal ensemble a complete and polished look.

Veils are very fragile, so it pays to be cautious when handling them. If you must take your veil to a hair trial, keep the tulle inside the plastic bag, and pull the comb from the top of the bag for your stylist to practice putting in your hairdo. The last thing you need is for your beautiful veil to get snagged on something in the salon or stepped on by your hairdresser!

One more tip on caring for your veil: if your veil features a ribbon or satin bias trim, ask the bridal salon to carefully iron the edge after the veil has been steamed. It sounds minor, but it makes an incredible difference in how your veil hangs. After all, your veil is your crowning glory - you want it to look perfect on your wedding day. For many women, it is only once they put on their veil that they truly feel like a bride.

What is Stainless Steel?

What exactly is stainless steel? Stainless steel is a steel alloy with chromium in it. It has a minimum of eleven percent chromium. It is different from carbon steel because it has the chromium present it helps to stop the corrosion of the metal. With carbon steel it rusts quickly when it is exposed to the air or moisture. There are over one hundred and fifty. Out of the hundred and fifty only fifteen are more commonly used.

It is used in many things because it has a resistance to corrosion and staining. But also is low maintenance, relatively low cost, and has a familiar luster. It is used in sculpture, building facades and building structures.

Iron Man

It is also used in everyday items. For example the knives that you use for your kitchen are made of stainless steel so that they last longer. If it were made out of carbon steel it would show signs of corrosion quickly. Also the band on your watch is made from stainless steel.

What is Stainless Steel?

For each of the different types of metal there are different coatings. The reason for that is because it depends on how much exposure the metal is going to get. On carbon steel the rust is called iron oxide and when the rust is present it speeds up the process. It continues to spread through the metal and to the metals internal structure. Making the steel unusable. Eventually if the metal is still exposed to the environment it will develop holes and crumble when you try to pick it up.

With stainless steel, which is also known as corrosion resistant steel, have high amounts of chromium in it so that it can protect the metal from its environment. The chromium oxide actually helps to stop the rust from spreading.

This type of corrosion protection was first recognized in 1812. His name was Pierre Berthier. He was a French metallurgist. He noticed the reaction of the metal when it was exposed to certain acids. He actually then suggested that it start to be used when making cutlery. Unfortunately at that time it was hard for them to make a metal that was low in carbon and high in chromium. And the metals that they were able to make that had high chromium were way to brittle to use.

It wasn't until 1912 that is was up to be patented. It was in the US by a man named Elwood Haynes. The patent was not approved until 1919.

Golf Club Suggestions For High-Handicapper's, Mid-Handicapper's and Low-Handicapper's Bags

How do you know which clubs are best for you? Your budget and skill level will be part of your decision as to which clubs to choose. However, here are some guidelines. These are only guidelines. If you have a favorite club that is not listed, keep it.

The High-Handicapper's bag:

Iron Man

3-wood

Golf Club Suggestions For High-Handicapper's, Mid-Handicapper's and Low-Handicapper's Bags

5-wood, 7-wood

5-iron through 9-iron

pitching wedge

putter

If you are a High-Handicapper, you would be better off not spending your money on a Driver. A Driver for a High-Handicapper puts them farther off the fairway, not farther down the fairway, so stay away from a Driver at this time.

The Mid-Handicapper's bag:

driver

3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood

4-iron through 9-iron

pitching wedge

sand wedge

putter

You might want to add a lob wedge or gap wedge to this assortment. You may also consider adding a fairway wood.

The Low-Handicapper's bag:

driver

3-wood

2-iron (or substituting a gap wedge for the 2 iron) through the 9-iron

pitching wedge

lob wedge

sand wedge

putter

Remember, the "Rules of Golf" allow you to carry a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag. After all is said and done, use the clubs you feel comfortable with

Now that you have a guide as to which clubs are best for you, let us talk about how to solve some problems which you might encounter in your golf game. Here are some suggestions for solving those problems. Suppose you hit a nice drive but it drifts right and off the fairway into the trees. How do you recover from this shot? A rule of thumb is that when you are in trouble, take the shortest, safest shot back onto the fairway. However, there are some choices to recover your shot. One suggestion is to take a wedge and loft the ball back onto the fairway and on the next shot hit safely to the green

Living Big on Little Money - A Guide to an Inexpensive Lifestyle

First off, it's important to let everyone know that this article reflects my personal views and the way I like to live. I respect the way everyone chooses to live and the path they must follow may that be a corporate lifestyle our one of living off the land. Everyone is here to experience there own journey and I respect all of us and the courage it takes.

With that said, let's start.

Iron Man

I was in the newspaper business as an artist & prepress artist for over 20 years. I always had a good paycheck coming in but most of the time found myself struggling for money soon after pay day. Of course I blamed it on not being paid enough and it wasn't until I left the corporate world that I learned that not being paid enough was not my problem. It was what I was spending it on and how much money I was actually throwing away.

Living Big on Little Money - A Guide to an Inexpensive Lifestyle

I decided to leave the corporate world after I reached the weight of 335 lbs. I was very badly depressed, close to suicidal and saw no hope in life. I had no idea how hard my decision to leave the corporate world would be and I had no clue how rewarding and inspirational it would turn out.

I learned that money wasn't as important as I thought it was and that it didn't bring me happiness, it was honestly part of my depression. What I have learned sense the summer of 2004 I have to give thanks to Joe, a homeless man I met in Homer, Alaska. I think he could tell that I was out of my element and he took me under his wing and taught me how to survive.

The first thing you need to understand is that people can survive on much less food than what they consume every day. My journey to Alaska proved that, I had a daily food budget of just .00. That's right, .00. The funny thing is that I never seemed hungry, I was to busy trying to find wood to make life just a little more comfortable.

When I got back to the lower 48, I was still unemployed so every cent counted. I would go to the grocery store and look in the reduced price section of the meat department but most of the time it was still to expensive for my budget. I found something that added flavor to each meal and it cost next to nothing. This may sound disgusting, and maybe it is but the key ingredient in many of my meals at the time was pork fat. I know, Oh my God and junk, that's disgusting. I will be honest, it took a while to get used to it but it did add flavor and was filling. I usually mixed it together with Ramen noodles for a filling meal.

When I did find miscellaneous employment here and there I still didn't splurge but kept my food choices to not the best cuts of meat. Some of the cuts that I really enjoy are Pork Boston Butt Roast, Beef Chuck Roast and Chicken Thighs.

Uses for Pork Boston Butt Roast:

- You can cut it up to make pork fajita
- Slow cook it for a great tasting roast
- Slow grill(3 to 4 hours, med. low heat) for one of the tastiest meals you can imagine.
- Slice thin to make BBQ sandwiches.
- Cut pieces, pound with mallet, flour and make your own chicken fried steak.
- Grind to make pork burgers or homemade sausage.
- Cut or sliced and served with Ramen noodles.

Experiment with different seasoning and marinades to desired taste. This is a versatile cut of meat.

Uses for Beef Chuck Roast:

- Cut it up to make beef fajita
- Cut into steaks, grill or fry (taste like steak, not roast)
- Slow roast with potatoes and carrots for a pot roast meal

Uses for Chicken Thighs:

- To many and varied to list here. Grilled, fried, baked, whatever way you prepare always ends up in a good meal. Experiment and explore the web, you will find great and cost efficient ways to create a great meal.

I know everyone loves Pizza but let's be honest, Pizza is terribly expensive. I have a great recipe at the end of this article for a simple pizza made with tortilla's that is surprisingly good, the kids will love it.

Use something at each meal that will help fill you up. Some cheap ways to do this are with rice, potatoes or Ramen noodles. A good way I have found to make rice is to use either a beef or chicken broth instead of plain water. I like to use chicken and beef bullion cubes, they cost less than the pre made broth.

When it comes to canned foods and fresh vegetables check the grocery stores newspaper ads for deals. Also shop smart, look for deals and always buy at least a weeks worth of groceries. Stay away from going to the grocery store every day, getting what you are hungry for at that time. It will cost you.

If you have the means, grow your own vegetables and herbs, even if you live in an apartment you can do this. My wife and I live in an RV and still grow some of our own stuff. Place planted pots of veggies and herbs on your deck, build an above ground garden, making sure it has good drainage. Also, join in if your town has a community garden. It's a great opportunity to grow your own stuff and a way to make new friends. Check the web for other opportunities.

Another good way to save money is to make my own bread. The recipe I use along with others are listed at the end of this article.

I have been known to visit the dollar menu's at some of the fast food restaurants and when I do I make sure to take an extra pack or two of condiments and napkins. Even though this may sound unethical, you have to be honest with your situation at the time and it all comes down to survival.

A very important rule to remember is to never steal, purposely hurt or take advantage of another human being. When I was in Alaska, I had my life savings stolen from me and as tough as that made things, it had a good affect and taught me allot about myself in the end. Like Earl, I believe in karma and what goes around comes around. That's something I don't want to be on the losing end of.

Like I stated earlier, my wife and I live in an RV year round. If you don't own your own place this is a good option other than renting. When you rent you are just throwing your money away. If you are concerned about living in the RV during the winter don't be, read my article Winterizing Your RV - Enjoy a Comfy and Cozy Winter Retreat.

We still pay rent for the land we are parked on during the winter, 0 a month and that includes sewer, water, cable and the internet. During the summer months we drive up into the mountains and just find places to park. You still need to pay to dump the tanks and fill up the fresh water tank but that costs just pennies a day.

There are many ways to live a less expensive life, it's up to you to find your comfort zone.
If you would like to read the story of my trip to Alaska you can find it on my blog listed in my profile. The stories name is "Homer in a Hurry".

Backwoods Bread

This is a very simple recipe and easy to make, you don't even have to kneed the dough.

Ingredients:

6 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of active dry yeast
2 teaspoons of salt
2 teaspoons of either garlic salt or onion salt. (optional)
3 cups of room temperature water

In one bowl mix the yeast in the water. In another bowl mix the salt and garlic or onion salt into the flour. Pour water into flour and stir with a wooden spoon. This will make a sloppy, stringy wet dough. Cover with a cloth and let sit for 12-24 hours.

After 12-24 hours dust the top with flour and roll into a greased cooking bowl or crock, it does not do well in a pan. Once in baking dish, let sit for 1 hour before baking.

Bake at 375 degrees for 55 minutes in high altitudes, 45 minutes at lower altitudes. Let cool on cooling rack for 1/2 hour. Butter and enjoy.

Extra:

Very good if you butter the bread, place on cookie sheet and bake at 410 degrees for 10 minutes or until crisp. I add a fried egg on top for a quick and tasty breakfast.

Indian Fry Bread

4 cups of flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoons of salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup warm water

Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add in the shortening and water. Add only enough water to make dough stick together. Knead dough until smooth, make into fist sized balls. Cover them with a towel for 10 minutes then pat them out into circles about the size of a pancake. Heat shortening in cast iron skillet and fry until brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels and serve.

Great with butter and jam.

Pork Boston Butt Roast

Ingredients:

1 (5-pound) pork butt roast
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons seasoned salt
4 tablespoons liquid smoke
1 medium onion, sliced
1 cup water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix salt and pepper, garlic salt and seasoned salt together in small bowl.

Sprinkle 1 side of the roast with liquid smoke and rub salt and pepper, garlic salt and seasoned salt mixture onto meat, making sure to rub well. Flip the roast over and repeat. Place the roast in a large roasting pan. Add the onion and water to the roast. Place in the oven and cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until thermometer reads 170 degrees F. Let meat cool for a few minutes and then slice.

Serve with your favorite barbecue sauce.

Cooking in the great outdoors always seems to help the food you create to taste even better. We wanted to share some of our favorite recipes, thus the reason for this cookbook. Every recipe indicates our personal preference of ingredients, so you can make changes to any recipe for your personal tastes. If you love the outdoors, enjoy cooking and love the way food tastes in the great outdoors, we think you will enjoy these recipes.

Crispy Grilled Pizza

Single serving with your choice of toppings

Ingredients you will need:

1 medium sized flour tortilla
4 tbls. spaghetti sauce
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
You're choice of toppings: Pepperoni, sausage, ham, mushrooms, etc...

How to prepare your meal.....
Spread the spaghetti sauce evenly over the flour tortilla. Cover the spaghetti sauce with the mozzarella cheese add your toppings. Make sure not to over do it with the toppings or cheese, this can cause the finished pizza to be soggy.

The grill should be on a medium to medium high heat. Rub grill with olive oil, this will help the pizza not to stick and give you pretty grill lines

For a crispy pizza, place pizza directly on grill. If you don't want your pizza to be crispy, place on a cookie sheet.

Grill for 8-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Can also be done in the oven. Place pizza on rack and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes or until cheese has melted.

Twilight Sparkles Like Diamonds in the Sun

Kristen Stewart, who was known mostly for her wonderful performance next to the incomparable Jodie Foster in 2002's The Panic Room, has pulled another fantastic display of acting ability out of her hat with The Twilight Saga, New Moon. Not believing the sequel could possibly be as entertaining as the first in the series, Twilight, I came away completely satisfied and found myself looking forward to the next movie. I actually thought I was done with movie series, finding myself a bit worn out from Lord of the Rings and completely drained from the Harry Potter movies. Twilight has somehow renewed my movie going strength and next to Iron Man, I do not think I could possibly look forward to anything else with as much anticipation.

In Twilight, Director Catherine Hardwicke has taken the beginnings of an old story and given it new meaning when a teenage girl (Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan) moves to a new town to live with her Father, Charlie Swan, superbly handled by Billy Burke. Bella is a withdrawn girl who is slightly introverted but manages to make friends anyway with a group of kids who are not quite nerds but by no means the most popular either. Then she meets Edward Cullen, again, a prime example of what good casting can do for a movie as Robert Pattinson literally sparkles in this role, and you can tell instantly that there is something unsettling and infatuating for him in her. This is where things get interesting as after first avoiding her like the plague and then saving her life twice, they quickly and seamlessly fall completely in love and she gets the shock of her life (until the sequel) as he reveals why he is so mysterious.

Iron Man

Writer Stephenie Meyer takes the vampire lore and gives it an exciting and very believable twist, explaining as the movie rolls perfectly along, all the differences that make our vampire a hero instead of something that needs to be hunted and staked. From skin, that sparkles with diamond like quality in the sun, to the need to play baseball during a thunderstorm to mask the sound of bat hitting ball with superior to human strength, Stephenie Meyer manipulates the legend like a skilled magician handles a deck of cards and when she is finished, she leaves us wishing we were all vampires. (Except for that part about being soulless and damned) If the end of this fine cinematic achievement is a bit predictable, all is forgiven as the acting and the pace literally carries you through to the final scene and leaves you wanting more. It is quite rare for a movie of this caliber to tie up all the loose ends so neatly and still be able to surprise us so completely in the sequel.

Twilight Sparkles Like Diamonds in the Sun

Speaking of sequels, since the movie The Twilight Saga, New Moon has only recently been released and is already the number one DVD on the planet, I will not go into detail because I hear there is a guy somewhere in the African rain forest who has not seen it yet. I can tell you this, though. I knew deep in my heart that the good-looking, love struck, Native American boy Jacob was going to have a big part in at least one of the sequels but I was taken so off guard by his lycanthropic blood-line that I have to admit, Mrs. Meyer is a genius and an extremely talented and creative writer.

If you are one of the two or three people in the movie-going world that has not seen The Twilight Saga, one or two, please, go immediately to your nearest video store and buy, not rent, this incredible love story. Believe me; you will be happy that you did.

A Look At Foods That Can Help You Get Pregnant

Down through the ages, advice and tips have been given to women on what foods will help them get pregnant. This has caused many hopeful mothers-to-be rushing off to eat whatever has been advised. Actually, women fall pregnant everyday without a thought to what they are eating. But many do swear by some foods they call fertility boosters.

Apparently, oysters are not only known as an aphrodisiac, but also as a fertility booster. They are chock full of zinc, an essential nutrient in conception. When the body lacks zinc, the menstrual cycle is disrupted and the egg production slows down. For those that are not into slurping on oysters, they can choose chicken, beef, eggs, dairy, or nuts to get their zinc.

Iron Man

For years, the world has heard how vitamin C is good for the body. Well, studies have shown that it is vital in conception too. It is especially important for women already on fertility medication and in helping women who already have ovulation problems. However, women are not the only ones that benefit, when a man lacks vitamin C their sperm may clump, decreasing the chance of conceiving. Smokers especially benefit from this vitamin, as the antioxidants are essential if they want to conceive.

A Look At Foods That Can Help You Get Pregnant

One thing many look forward to at Thanksgiving is the yams. Now, those trying to conceive have another reason to enjoy those Thanksgiving yams. Researchers believe that there may be ovulation-stimulating substances in yams. They offer as proof the fact that many women who consume wild yams seem to have a much higher rate of twins than those who do not. Even though store bought ones are not wild, they still have lot of fertility-friendly vitamins and just may be the key to conceiving.

Lean meats such as beef, chicken, and turkey are all great providers of a very important fertility-boosting nutrient: iron. It has been found that women with an iron deficiency have a harder time falling pregnant than those who do not. The trick here is not to overeat protein, as that may decrease fertility. Try for three servings a week and replace one animal protein with beans or tofu at times.

Packed full of antioxidants to protect the body from cell damage and cell aging, berries are essential in conception. Protecting cells in the body includes the eggs. Blueberries and raspberries top the list as the best in berries. However, blackberries and strawberries are fertility-friendly also. These are perfect to snack on, in desserts, and as toppings in the morning.

While stuffing your body full of good for you fertility foods, you have to learn which ones to avoid. Trans fat is the biggest culprit. Too much trans fat in your diet increases the chances of ovulatory infertility, which decreases your chances of conceiving. Caffeine is another culprit, in all forms. It has been linked to low fertility and while it includes coffee and strong tea, chocolate is also in that equation.

It is important to eat healthy whether you are trying to get pregnant or not, so it just makes sense to eat fertility-boosting foods if you are. Not only are you giving your body the healthy nutrients and vitamins it needs, you are increasing you chances of conception at the same time. And, since you will need a well balanced diet when you fall pregnant, it just makes sense to start prepregnancy with fertility-friendly foods.

Conflict Resolution - Solomon's Advice Part 1

If we were to put all of the problems that we might encounter in a business, a friendship or a marriage into a pot and boil them down, what do you think might remain? The biggest factor in most failed businesses or friendships or marriages is 'unresolved conflicts.' Marriages have been ruined and family relationships ripped apart, brother against brother, because of unresolved conflicts. This is one factor that can devastate a business. When there is an unresolved issue between partners or employer and employee, often the entire business suffers. Knowing this, you might think that people would not leave issues unresolved. Theoretically that is sound but it is extremely difficult when neither party is equipped to handle problem resolution.

In Proverbs 18:19 (NKJV) tells us that "A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, and contentions are like the bars of a castle."

Iron Man

Conflicts, disagreements or arguments, contentions, adversities, trials and tribulations are all part of daily life. Jesus told us that men would hate us because of Him. The fact is that the confusion that conflicts and adversities cause is a test of our Christian fortitude. How we handle them is determined by how well we are able to use the principles that we learn from God's Holy Book of Wisdom.

Conflict Resolution - Solomon's Advice Part 1

That is a bold statement but it is true. Using the principles given us by Solomon in his Proverbs can determine the success or failure of handling conflicts in business and in our homes. If you use Solomon's principles every conflict can be handled. Without the benefit of the knowledge and wisdom given us in Solomon's principles, we are headed for more difficulty than we want. Conflicts and adversities can be handle without Solomon's principles but it is a difficult and often frustrating option to take, more than not, ending in failure. Going it on your own without the benefit of Solomon's principles will usually end in a great deal of stress and tension, both at work and at home. Often problems at home will bleed into our professional life and vice versa.

A good question for each of us to ask is 'who wins?' when there is a conflict. Take a look at the conflicts that you have had in your life. Who walked away from that conflict feeling good? I am confident is saying that no one won the battle, but there were probably many victims left injured.

This may sound strange to many but, depending on how we react, conflicts can bring opportunities. The immediate result may not seem as though it is a blessing but often, later, the resolution to that conflict may reveal an even better solution than first imagined.
Never forget that God's Word tells us that God can take a bad situation and can create something wonderful from it. He can take a situation where there seems to be no way out and show us a better way.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (New King James Version)

"12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."

There are two basic types of conflict that we need to look at. We initiate or contribute to one type of conflict and someone or something that is not in our control initiates the second. There is seldom a conflict, either under our control or not, that does not result in wounded egos and often physical wounds.

It is human nature to defend our point of view and ourselves. Often, however, our defense goes out of control and becomes offensive. One person attacks and the other counterattacks trying to inflict as many wounds as possible. This usually spins out of the control of either party. Solomon tells us that at this point the argument becomes foolishness, which benefits no one.

It is important in any argument, whether started by us or not, to realize the point of the argument. Often we can avoid the severe exchange of hurtful accusations and epithets by simply softening our tone. Proverbs 15:1 (NKJV) "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." is the perfect explanation for this. Sometimes a simple soft or gentle answer can abate an argument.

On the other hand, sometimes a heated exchange of points of view can be healthy if it is controlled and not allowed to degenerate into insult slinging. In Proverbs 27:17 (NLT) "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." Solomon is teaching us this type of exchange. Have you ever seen a chef sharpen his knife with sharpening steel? The friction of the 'steel against steel' or 'iron against iron' cause the honing of the knife to make it sharp. When we control the exchange of conflicting points of view, we can discover a better solution.
