The new blockbuster movie Iron Man has been a box office smash in the first few weeks it has been on the scene. No doubt this is the first of a series of Iron Man movies that will be produced over the next few years.
Iron Man is a production of Marvel Comics and the Marvel franchise has really picked up steam over the last few years when it comes to collectibles. The success of movies like Spider Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four and now Iron Man will no doubt continue to fuel the Iron Man collectibles fire. Like most hot movies, the amount of collectibles available right now is pretty high but over the coming years, the supply will dwindle to a trickle and those smart enough to grab a few choice pieces now will be left laughing last.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in such an amazing event as the Iron Man Triathlon. I truly value living in a free and democratic country that is not only war free but beautiful beyond belief. To have 5000 volunteers for 2500 athletes is phenomenal and I commend the people of Penticton for continuing to do such an outstanding job of hosting this event.
The journey to the starting line of Iron Man Canada in Penticton started about a year ago. I had completed 14 marathons and a handful of ½ Iron Man triathlons but the Iron Man always seemed so mind boggling and apparently out of my reach.

My Iron Man game plan was to:

The biggest obstacle in my mind was the gargantuan task of running a full 26 mile marathon after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112 miles. How did these people do it? My friend Don Henderson described the marathon in the Iron Man as a more of a "pilgrimage" or journey to the sacred land.
I chose to compete in the Iron Man because I knew it would be a sacred journey into the unknown. I dreamed about completing it ever since I saw Paula Newby Fraser and Mark Allen conquer the course in Kailua Kona, Hawaii in 1992.
1. Hope for the Best:
I recently researched and wrote about two people who recovered from life threatening illnesses. They learned to embrace the journey of recovery and transcended their tragic circumstances. The key for both of these people was to visualize the end result. They practiced visualization daily and saw themselves as healthy and leading happy productive lives. I followed in their foot steps and immediately started visualizing myself at the Iron Man finish line with my arms raised in victory and the crowd cheering loudly.
The obvious next step was to hire a coach and come up with a feasible training schedule.
I did not have to reinvent the wheel in preparing for the race as I hired my friend David Kazakoff a 9 time Iron Man finisher. He wisely gave me my schedule 1 month at a time so I could keep focused and not get too concerned about the rigorous training near the end. The four key components of my training were:
o 1. Balance --the 3 disciplines of swim, bike and run,
o 2. Focus --on the current workout only
o 3. Discovery --Enjoy all of the experiences and embrace this sacred journey
o 4. Fun --There is no point in doing all this training unless you enjoy the experience and have fun. I have observed many triathletes train for the Iron Man with vastly different approaches. My two 2 heroes are Leslie Riva and Lori Allin because they always looked so happy and seemed to love every minute of their training and the race itself. I wanted to be like them!
Plan for the Worst:
I was astutely instructed to prepare for something to go wrong during training sessions and on race day itself. I had my share of challenges including a fickle front derailleur, a rash of 10 flat tires and horrible cycling weather.
The most memorable training day occurred in late July. I was nicely on my way up island for my longest bike ride of the year (180km) when I got two flat tires in a row. I was only mildly annoyed and merrily on my way until I heard the dreaded thump of yet another flat tire. I was out of spare tubes, 70 kilometers away from home and it was about 34 degrees Celsius. Luckily I packed a cell phone and had memorized the local taxi company's number. However, my mouth dropped when the dispatcher said he could not pick me up for another 3 hours! I finally managed to contact my office manager Nancy who graciously saved me from walking home. Needless to say, I have a great respect and appreciation for loyal employees and cell phones.
Sunday August 27, 2006 was race day and I was ready. I was very fortunate and grateful to have the fantastic support of my girlfriend Laurie and her 12 year old son Taylor. They woke up with me at 4:30 and accompanied me to the start line for body marking and pre race preparation. Taylor supported me on my training runs by riding along side on his bike. I always wondered why he was always riding so far in front of me. Later I learned that he was embarrassed with me wearing my purple biking "spanky" pants. He couldn't let his friends see him with me!
When the cannon blasted to start the swim I was very excited along side the other 2500 competitors. I was going to have fun and treat this as just one long day of training. Within the first 300 meters of the swim, I was punched in the nose and kicked in the chin. I also heard a cry of, "get off of me!" I should have followed the swim strategy of the Iron Man triathlon author and expert Ray Fauteux and stayed totally to the left of everybody! However, I remained calm and focused and had a decent swim. As I exited the water, the announcer was boisterously calling out all our names. Before I knew it, I had my wet suit off and navigated my way to the change tent full of naked bodies and wet suits. I found my bike easily and was on the next stage of the journey. The bike ride was absolutely spectacular. The first 60 kilometers through Oliver and Osoyoos was pretty easy and I felt very good.
I had driven the bike course 3 days ago so I knew that the challenging hills started at Richter's pass and continued for another two to three hours. The view going up Richter's pass was absolutely spectacular and I was actually talking to people as I rode along side them. The drafting police were very lenient as it was almost impossible to keep 4 bike lengths behind the other bikers in such a big pack. We had aid stations every 10 miles and I just loved pouring cold water on my face and body! The support of the fans along all parts of the course is totally awesome and I really appreciated Dave, Jennifer and Pheona cheering me on from their vehicle.
Aside: Even though I consumed about 5 bottles of Gatorade on the bike and the run I did not have to pee once! Apparently my body utilized all of these fluids.
The ascent up Yellow Lake reminded me of the Tour de France and I almost expected officials to let us take our helmets off. The winding downhill felt wonderful and I had tears of joy as I saw the view of Penticton and the airport. The bike portion was nearly over and I was pumped full of adrenalin and as high as a kite!
Expect the Unexpected:
I was extremely relieved to get off my bike and into my nice comfortable running shorts. I had a good transition and was fueled up and ready to go. Nothing could stop me now because the run was my strongest event.
However, a funny thing happened just after the 3 mile mark of the run.
I planned on running a mile and then walking through each aid station. But after the 3rd aid station I could not run any more. I was exhausted, depleted and forced to walk. I had 20 miles left, struggling uphill, heading into the wind and it was 33 degrees Celsius! What was I going to do? It was at that point I heard the imaginary voice of my swim coach Malcolm telling me that I had gone out too hard on the bike and had nothing left.
"But honestly, I was holding back!"
I also remembered Paula Newby Fraser telling us that we better have a plan when something like this happened. My new plan was to get some different types of food inside me because I was absolutely sick and disgusted with power gel. I tried many grapes and water but that did not work. My last hope was the special needs station at the half way point. I had placed a container of apricot baby food and a spoon in my special needs bag and I hungrily devoured it; but most importantly my stomach approved. I slowly jogged to the next aid station and discovered oranges. My stomach liked them too! I was becoming stronger and in a few miles I was now able to run at a good pace for a mile at a time! My mood had drastically improved and I was no longer depleted and "supercrabby."
By mile 24, I once again became very fatigued after a nasty uphill. However, I was so close to the finish line I could hear the cheering of the fans. I was going to keep running no matter what!
My legs were aching and my stride was shortened but I was magically pulled along by the cheers from the crowd and the voice of the finish line announcer! It was dark and I had difficulty seeing where I was supposed to run. Then suddenly a familiar voice yelled out my name and gave me a high five. It was Laurie! Her presence and support gave me a sudden burst of energy and it seemed as if I was sprinting to the finish line. I was so close to the finish line when the Gods played one last nasty trick on my fellow competitors and me.
We had to run past the finish line for half a mile, turn around and come back. I was so angry but even more determined not to stop. I made it to the turnaround and ran toward the finish line. The next few minutes reminded me of a near death experience. All I remember was the absolutely magnificent energy from the cheering spectators and the blinding bright lights at the finish line.
All I had to do was keep running to the bright lights and I would be home. The cheering got louder and the lights got brighter. It seemed as if everything was in slow motion as I neared the Holy Grail. Laurie snuck in front of the crowd to give me another high five as I neared the finish line. The announcer screamed out, "Here is your next winner!" I raised my arms in the air victoriously just as I had visualized a thousand times before and I felt the exquisite sensation of my torso pushing through the finish line ribbon!
And then for one brief moment...
Life was perfect.

But instead of a terrorist group, he had to escape capture from the Vietnamese during Vietnam War. In both cases, an ordinary man was able to become a superhero through trying times with no particular super power.

At first glance, Iron Man may seem a fit to what we consider as a superhero in our culture. He can fly. He can lift very heavy things, like a car, and toss them. He can withstand bullets and many forms of weapons. Truly, as a super hero, Ironman is as powerful as they get. But behind the costume is just a man.

But what a powerful concept to inspire your kids! A man who overcame obstacles much more powerful than him. A man was resourceful enough to come up with a solution that kept himself alive. A man disciplined in the sciences so that he can create extraordinary devices with limited supply of raw materials.
In the comic books, Iron Man was a founding member a superhero group called the Avengers, dubbed as Earth's mightiest heroes. The original Avengers included Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, the Hulk, and Iron Man. Of all these members, Iron Man was the only who does not have special powers.
Ant-Man and Wasp were able to change their sizes from insect to giant (100 ft). The Wasp was also able to shoot electrical bursts from her hand. Thor was an immortal, the Asgardian god of war. And the Hulk was strength incarnate from gamma ray exposure. Yet, with ingenuity, Iron Man was able to match well as an Avenger when saving humankind from extraterrestrial danger.
Perhaps the most important reason why Iron Man is a great inspiration was his courage to change to do the right thing. In the movie, while under captivity, he observed that his weapons, the ones manufactured by Starks Industries, were being used by terrorists. In fact he was kidnapped by the terrorists to create another sinister weapon that can be used to wage war.
After some soul searching, he had an epiphany that his resources were better for use in defending the innocents rather than empowering war mongers. This was a very bold decision because much of Starks Industries' business come from military weapons sales. He was practically committing corporate suicide, but nevertheless, he was a man with resolve in doing what he thought was the right thing.

If Iron Man is any indication, this summer could be one of the best ever for movie buffs. The first movie of the summer tends to set the tone, and Iron Man has stormed out of the gates, earning rave reviews from both fans and critics, and washing the bad taste of last summer's big May movie, Spider-Man 3, out of all of our mouths.
Iron Man is a Marvel comic book character that made his debut in 1963. The character is still alive and kicking in the comic book world, most recently as a central figure in Marvel's Civil War mini series, as a member of the Mighty Avengers, and in two of his own monthly comic books.

Comic book fans have been anxiously awaiting the Iron Man movie ever since the cast was announced, and, especially after some footage was screened at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con. Well, the wait is over, and the movie is absolutely worth the wait!
Movie Review - Iron Man
Robert Downey, Jr., plays Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist who has made a fortune developing weapons for the US government. He lives a lavish playboy lifestyle, with a scotch in one hand and a super model at his side. While in the Middle East for a weapons demo for the US government, his convoy is attacked and he is taken prisoner by bad guys using his company's weapons. The bombing results in shrapnel slowly destroying his heart, so another captive, (a scientist/surgeon no less), hooks him up to a car battery and creates an electro-magnet to keep the pieces from killing him. Stark's captors want him to build missiles for them, but he has other plans.
Long story short, Stark creates a suit of armor that helps him escape. Back in the U.S. and still reeling from the fact that his weapons have fallen into the hands of the enemy, he swears off weapons manufacturing and goes to work on a new suit of armor that will help him defeat the bad guys. Little does he know that the baddest of the bad is one of his closest friends, (see the movie to find out who it is).
Iron Man is one of the best super hero movies ever for a variety of reasons: First, Robert Downey, Jr., was born to play Tony Stark and he steals the film. He brings humor, drama and action to Tony Stark/Iron Man, and makes him a character that the audience can care about and identify with. He is surrounded by an A-list supporting cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, (Stark's assistant), Terrence Howard, as his friend, Jim Rhodes, and Jeff Bridges and his mentor, Obediah Stane. All of these actors bring their comic book characters to glorious life on the big screen.
The story is simple, yet compelling, thanks to a great script and dialogue. There are some great moments for comic book fans, but you don't have to be a fanboy or girl to dig the movie. *Note to comic book fans and regular viewers alike, make sure that you stay in the theater through the end of the credits for a very cool cameo that sets the stage for future Marvel movies.
The special effects are outstanding, most notably the Iron Man armor developed by Stan Winston Studios, (Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Jurassic Park). There is nothing that looks fake or hokey. The action sequences are well done and thrilling.
The one chink in Iron Man's armor could be the music. The score is cookie-cutter Hans Zimmer fare, similar to what you would hear in many Jerry Bruckheimer films. There really is no Iron Man "theme," but the score does function fairly well as background music and helps move the action forward.
This is the first movie financed completely by Marvel under their new Marvel Studios division, and it's a home-run. One of the cool things that this sets up is the possible interaction among different Marvel properties in the same film, since certain characters are in films under the Marvel Studios banner. There are rumors flying that Tony Stark shows up in The Incredible Hulk, (another Marvel Studios film), due in June. And, Marvel announced future Marvel Studios projects this week, including Iron Man 2 and Thor in 2010 and Captain America and an Avengers film in 2011. The future looks bright for Marvel Studios and comic book fans.
Iron Man is rated PG-13 for language and violence and gets a solid "A" rating from me.

The sequel becomes the first topic of conversation after a movie, especially a super hero film, has great reviews and even greater box office. Such was the case for the first Iron Man movie. Most people weren't expecting such a perfect origin story, incredible acting, outstanding special effects and (most shocking of all) that Robert Downey Jr. became Tony Stark. After such a spectacular beginning, talk started immediately about the second film and when it would appear in the grand scheme of Marvel's plans for an Avenger film. Would it come before all of the other Marvel film or after the Thor and Captain America films were released? Well, that question has been answered after Iron Man 2 was released this past weekend and sets us up perfectly for Iron Man's participation in the Avenger initiative.
At the end of the first Iron Man film, we witnessed Tony Stark telling the world that he was in fact Iron Man. This sort of thing is unheard of. No super hero reveals his secret identity to the world for fear that their enemies will come after their loved ones and family. So, now that Tony Stark and Iron Man are proven to be the same person, what will that do to Tony's life and the people in it? This is the main question faced in this movie and it is a brilliant question indeed. How will this affect his business? Will he attract more enemies purely because he is Iron Man? Will he be able to keep his friends safe? Can he do it alone? Each of these complex issues is brought up in this second Iron Man film.

At the beginning of the film we are introduced to Ivan Vanko as he sits with his father Anton on his deathbed. The father Anton worked with Tony's father Howard to produce the Arc reactor that was introduced in the first film and is the technology in Tony's chest. Ivan's father was never given due credit for helping to create this technology and it left the Vanko family poor and wanting revenge for this betrayal. After Anton dies, Ivan sees that Tony is Iron Man and he decides to use his dad's technology to create a suit for himself to take his revenge on the Stark family. Once he builds his suit, that has whips made out of electricity, he is known as Whiplash.
Iron Man 2 Review
Meanwhile, Tony is dealing with his own issues. The government, after finding out that he is Iron Man, has stated that he needs to release his suit to them for government purposes. Stark industries won government contracts for defense weapons and they feel that the suit is now property of the government. Stark is not letting go of his suit stating that he and Iron Man are one and the same and it is his technology no matter his ties to the government contracts. All of this builds up to battles against both the government and their need for his technology and Whiplash who is strictly seeking revenge.
All in all, this is a terrific sequel that takes the best parts of the first film and expands on them. I wouldn't say that this film is any better than the first, but it is certainly equal to it in my opinion. This has also helped to raise my hopes for the upcoming movies by leaps and bounds. You can really see that they are trying to create continuity between all of their films. Also, be sure to stay in the theater through the end of the credit and you'll be treated to a nice surprise!

The new Iron Man 2 movie debuts in cinemas on May 7 2010. Kids love superheroes and even though the film is rated M and recommended for adults, they can't help but see all the cool trailers, toys and games coming out with the film.
Iron Man is owned by Marvel, a comic company that already has a large array of toys, comics, games and books on the iron clad superhero. For the youngest fan, Iron Man features prominently in the 3 inch Marvel Superhero Squad figures. The 3¾ inch range of action figures by Hasbro includes numerous versions of Iron Man, plus War Machine and Crimson Dynamo. Well I've got to say that in my family Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, is now at the top of our list as far as Superheroes go and as we prepare to celebrate Halloween this year, my son agrees, especially after seeing the movie, that the Iron Man Muscle Child Halloween Costume is the way to go for 2009.
I grew up reading comic books and like most boys, dreamed of saving the USA or world from whatever evil was threatening it at any given time. The great thing about this Superhero, especially now that we live in a world inundated with technological marvels, is that it is not too far fetched to making my boyhood dreams a reality. Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark is an industrialist playboy and genius engineer who while on a business trip is kidnapped and is forced to build a destructive weapon. Tony Stark shrewdly uses his bodyguard and corporate mascot to act as a cover as he goes about fighting corporate threats and an array of bad guys like Black Widow, the Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man as well as the ever favorite, Mandarin. Like all superheroes, no one suspects Stark of being one as he goes about being the rich playboy and industrialist. Stark is aided by his personal chauffeur Harold "Happy" Hogan and secretary Virginia "Pepper" Potts, both of whom he shares the truth of his alternate persona.
This fictional character first appeared in the Marvel Comics books in March 1963 in the "Tales of Suspense" #39 issue. The now very popular superhero was created by writer-editor Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. Interesting enough, you can see Stan Lee making a cameo appearance in most of the movies featuring his creations including Spiderman and Iron Man.
Tony Stark's creation has been a member of the superhero team the Avengers for most of the comic's history and has been featured in several iterations of his own various comic book series. The character is now portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. in the live action film and features briefly in The Incredible Hulk. GREAT NEWS! Downey will reprise the role in the upcoming sequel, Iron Man 2 which will certainly make the Iron Man Halloween Costume another big seller for Halloween 2009.
The Iron Man story including the Iron Man Halloween Costume, seems to be perfectly suited to the 21st century because the technology that made it possible for Tony Stark's creation of Iron Man now exists and is not as far fetched as it was when the comic book was first released.

With the summer release of "Iron Man", the screen adaptation of the Iron Man comics, director Jon Favreau brings to us yet another incarnation of a superhero from the Marvel Comics fraternity. However, in the wake of already existing 'onscreen marvel superheroes' like Spider-Man, X-Men, The Hulk, Daredevil, etc. the Iron Man movie manages to create quite a following among fans and critics alike. The movie manages to gather its strength mainly due to a matured treatment of a script which is both strong and tight, if not multi-layered.

The story revolves around a wealthy businessman and techie genius Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) running a modern warfare conglomerate in partnership with the malicious Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). Stark, in a business trip to Afghanistan, is compelled to construct a "Jericho Missile" for a group of terrorists. When he finally manages to elude them and escape back home, he decides to utilize the idea with the objective of launching a moral crusade against all evil and crime and finally vanquishes his nemesis, the wicked Iron Monger, an alter ego of Stane.
Iron Man Movie is a HUGE HIT!
Though the story may sound familiar, director Jon Favreau manages to attract the audience equipped mainly with a bevy of special effects which was chiefly done by ILM of the "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" fame. It can be said that they have done a commendable job especially in the transitions between the real and the CG costumes. However, it is the directorial skills that one has to watch out for. It can be easily said that Favreau has come a long way from his "Zathura", "Elf" or "Made" days. As for the soundtrack, Tom Morello's (Rage Against The Machine) guitar section deserves special mention.
The acting performances, though often sidelined in these kinds of ventures, have still contributed to the success of Iron Man. Among the main characters Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are all quite convincing. However the real treat in the movie comes from the veteran Jeff Bridges. Delivering an almost deliciously evil performance, Bridges has done everything that Kevin Spacey couldn't do in the 2006 Superman venture.

Iron Man 2 is being released on May 7, 2010 and promises to be a huge box office hit as much as it's predecessor. Already in stores is a the Iron Man 2 Action Figure collection, with all sorts of cool variations like the Iron Man 2 action figure concept series and movie series, as well as the Iron Man 2 action figure Armor Tech Deluxe series.
By far the most anticipated is the Armor Tech Deluxe range. These toys are the most detailed of them all, and they have some great accessories. This set is sold mainly with collectors in mind and shouldn't really be sold to young kids. The toys in this set are Shockwave Mission, Negative Zone Mission, and Juggernaut Mission. A favorite of these is the Negative Zone edition, with detachable missile accessories. It looks great, and standing on it's included pedestal, this will look terrific on display.

The comic book range has five figures announced at this moment. They are the Original, Original War Machine, Stealth, Crimson Dynamo, and Classic Armor. A favorite in this set is the Original War Machine. Already a fan favorite, this toy looks absolutely spectacular. The detail is modeled not after the film character, but rather the character in the Marvel comic books. With fantastic weapons, War Machine looks incredible. The classic figure in a vivid yellow and red also looks great. Fans from the 1970's will really love to get a hold of this edition.

The Iron Man 2 Action Figure Movie series will appeal to moviegoers and newer fans, and is what most collectors are going to jump on. War Machine will be hard to find in your local toy shop because it looks amazing. With some great detail and using the armor seen in the film, this toy displayed on your shelf will look great.
The other toys in the Iron Man 2 Action Figure set look great too, like the Mark VI Armor with two variants, one with power glow and one with the suitcase. Also available are Red Vortex, Inferno Mission, and others. Again, there was no scrimping on detail when these toys were designed.

Hulk Buster Armor. This armor is NOT in the movie. It's from a comic book, Iron Man #305. But to many, it is the most intriguing and the most exciting. In the comic books, Iron Man often crosses path with the Incredible Hulk. In one of the epic series, Tony Starks made the Hulkbuster armor in order to battle the Hulk hand-to-hand. The Hulk vs Iron Man is something fans hope to see in the big screen.

For the whole song, they just showed different audience members on the big screen. When the camera was on them, the highlighted person or persons would dance and cheer, and one couple even kissed.
There Must be Some Misunderstanding - Of These Lyrics!
First off, I don't understand the concept of panning to the crowd during a concert. The entire practice seems ludicrous. I paid my money to see Genesis, not Joe or Jane Philadelphia. Keep the camera on the band, please.
More confusing to me is why Genesis chose this song to focus on the audience. It makes no sense. This is not a happy song. This is not a cheerful song. This is certainly not a song that a couple should lovingly kiss to. This is an angry song sung by a guy who is essentially telling his ex that she is stupid for dumping him and some day she will regret it. Had the camera panned to an angry woman storming away from a man who was desperately pleading with her not to go, that would have been far more appropriate.
"Throwing it All Away," good song though it may be, has one purpose: If you are a male between the ages of thirty and forty and ever got desperate enough to make a mix tape to try to get a girl to get back together with you, then you absolutely put this song on that tape. That is the only purpose of this song. By the way, the mix tape never works. At the time, it may seem like a brilliant idea that is guaranteed to work, but it never does. We all try, but no woman in the history of the world has ever un-broken up with a guy because she was moved by the dulcet tones of Phil Collins singing "Throwing it All Away," or "Against All Odds." I would beg you not to do it, but I know you will anyhow. Now, if you happen to have a story of a girl who did get back together with you based on a mix tape, I'm all ears.
People should not dance and smile and kiss to "Throwing it All Away." It's like when people make "Every Breath You Take," by the Police their wedding song. That song is about a guy *stalking* his ex-girlfriend. Sting, the leader singer of the Police, even said, "It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control." Those are three concepts I want to use to commemorate my lifelong union with another person: Big Brother, surveillance, and control...
Speaking of wedding songs, I new a girl who was going to use "Kiss that Frog," by Peter Gabriel as her wedding song. On the one hand, this could be a song about seeking inner beauty; on the other hand, it could be about something completely different and altogether inappropriate. I won't get into exactly what it *could* be about here, but if you are curious go ahead and look it up on Google, then ask yourself if that is what you want your wedding guests thinking about as they watch the two of you take your first dance....
"Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen may be the worst victim of people paying attention to only one small part of a song and thereby missing the entire point. "Born in the USA" sounds like a very patriotic tune, but it is not. Unfortunately, most people miss that. When this rocking tune is played live, everyone starts waving their American flags. I remember being a child in the eighties watching my Saturday morning WWF (now WWE) professional wrestling show and hearing this song accompany the patriotic American wrestlers Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo as they came to the ring to wrestle the "evil" Russian and Iranian, Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik (it's amazing how acceptable hard-core xenophobia is in pro wrestling). "Born in the USA" was guaranteed to get the crowd into a patriotic frenzy.
If you think that pro-wrestling is not the best example of intelligent society, then you should also know that at the time President Reagan said that this song had a "message of hope that so many young Americans admire." Of course, you may think that President Reagan is not the best example of intelligent society, but come on, the guy won 525 of a possible 538 electoral vote. He had to be doing something right.
Unfortunately, "Born in the USA" may very well be the least patriotic song ever recorded! It is about a guy who gets in trouble with the law, gets shipped off to Vietnam, and then has an incredibly difficult time when he gets back home. It paints an extremely unflattering picture of the US. Not happy. Not patriotic. And yet, I am sure that the same people who boycotted and booed the Dixie Chicks for being Un-American still feel a surge of jingoistic pride when the Boss starts belting out, "Born in the USA!" over and over. (I'm sure there's a joke in there about country music and "intelligent society," but I don't want to go there J )
The point here is that these songs get so horribly misinterpreted when we only pay attention to one small part. "Need I say I love you, need I say I care?" makes "Throwing it all away" sound like a love song. "Every breath you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you," could be a very romantic line by the Police. "Born in the USA," repeated ad infinitum certainly sounds patriotic. But when you look at the whole picture, well, then you realize that it's a completely different story.
You may not sing along to lyrics, but there are times when we all make quick judgments based on incomplete information. A job applicant has a pleasant smile, so you assume they have an even temper. A waiter is a little harried, so they must be a mean, unhappy person. You see one picture of a nice vacation villa, and you fall in love with the idea of traveling there. Never mind the possibility that the job applicant is a jerk, the waiter is just having an off day, and the villa picture is from twenty years ago (and not from hurricane season!).
When you think about it, this approach makes a certain amount of sense. We currently live in the "Information Age," though I think it would be fair to call this the "Information Overload Age." To process things quickly, we often look at small slices and details and forget to look at the entire picture. In his excellent book, "Blink," Malcolm Gladwell calls this "Thin Slicing." I call it potential for disaster. If you don't pay attention to the entire picture, you may find yourself doing some very stupid things.
We know we're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but we do. To be fair, I have actually read quite a few excellent books based on their covers, but that is a very small life decision. Next time you have to make an *important decision* make sure you have the entire picture. Otherwise, you just might find yourself, "throwing it all away."
PS "Auld Lang Syne" literally translates to "old long since," or more conversationally as, "long ago" or "days gone by." Ironically, though most people are looking forward as the New Year begins, the song we all play and sing is actually about remembering the past.
Now you know. And knowing is half the battle...
